A summer BBQ filled with family,
fun and great grilling treats can be a delicious way to celebrate Independence
Day. Be warned though, despite the best intentions and healthy options
available, these festivities can also bring with them a huge diet derailment
trap. Don’t flock to the chips and dip; as this is a mecca of hidden diet
dangers. Tragically I found out my
favorite onion dip made with Lipton’s onion soup mix dip actually contains MSG.
So instead I suggest steering clear of those dangers and migrating toward the
fresh fruit, or veggies with hummus. Constant socializing around the buffet
table can lead to snacking, which adds up quickly, and then before you know it
you have blown your whole weeks worth of hard work.
Try making a reasonable plate of
health conscious snacks, converge away from the buffet, and enjoy while
catching up with your loved ones out of reach and out of temptation. Another
good tip is to eat a healthy salad or small snack before coming so you wont
allow your hunger to influence your food choices.
Grill your chicken skin on to
maintain the moisture, and then take the skin off before eating. This reduces
calories, fat, and keeps the carcinogens from charring on the skin and out of
your system. Reduce sodium intake by choosing salt free seasoning options like
lemon pepper, granulated garlic, or Mrs Dash. You will get bold flavors without
the negative consequences and next day bloat. Grilled shrimp kebabs are amazing and super
low calorie. Try brushing nearly any vegetable lightly with olive oil,
seasoning it simply with salt and pepper, then plop them on the grill on some
tin foil. Guaranteed to be a healthy and tasty addition to any outdoor meal.
Skip the macaroni salad and instead try a kale quinoa salad, or a fresh tomato,
basil, and mozzarella Caprese salad.
Now for a
truth that nobody wants to hear…alcohol has calories. Yikes, I know that sucks,
but there is a way to enjoy imbibing without feeling as guilty tomorrow. Stay
away from the margaritas, daiquiris, or other sugary concoctions. Not only do
they multiply the calories to the umpteenth degree, but also they add to that
less than fresh headed feeling the next morning. Instead stick to a light beer
or a couple glasses of wine. Keep it simple and don’t overdo it, no matter what
your poison of choice is.
